Create Some Christmas Traditions This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a wonderful time of year for children. The thought of Christmas quickly approaching fills children's spirits with excitement and joy. The holiday season can also be a great time to start Christmas traditions, offering wonderful opportunities for spending quality time with your family. You can start family traditions at any age in a child's life, giving them another reason to look forward to the holiday season. Creating family Christmas traditions offers a great opportunity for your family to bond with one another. Below are a few examples of some Christmas traditions that you can start with your family.

Christmas Cookies
A good Christmas tradition that you can easily start is to bake Christmas cookies on Christmas Eve. Try getting your family involved in making sugar cookies. You can let your kids pick great Christmas cookie cutter shapes to make delicious holiday cookies. Get the whole family involved in the decorating process. This will let your kids get creative and a little messy, which children love doing. That night, leave the cookies out for Santa to eat, or put them in tin can, decorative boxes, or just on a festive plate and deliver them to neighbors and friends.

Take a Walk
Another good idea for a Christmas tradition is to take a walk around the neighborhood on a calm night to look at all of the Christmas lights and decorations. Even taking a drive instead of a walk can offer just as much excitement for your children. Children love looking at the bright lights and how creative people can get when decorating their houses for the holiday season. Allow your children to pick out their favorite decorated houses. At the end of the night your family can vote on the one house that was the best decorated. Then, next year when the first Christmas lights start showing up on houses, your kids will begin to look forward to their night of Christmas light hunting.

Christmas Tree
For another Christmas tradition idea, get everyone in the family involved in decorating the Christmas tree. You can come up with a theme for the tree or just decorate it freely. Take the family to the store to pick out ornaments and decorations to put on the tree. Once the tree is finished, the whole family will be proud of the work they put into it.

Christmas Count Down
For younger children, you can start a tradition of making a count down decoration. Get different colored construction paper and cut the pieces of paper into thin strips. Use one strip of paper for every day left until Christmas. Glue the pieces into rings, interlocking each other, forming a chain. Every night before bed, allow your child to remove one ring, keeping track of the count down until Christmas.

Christmas Story
Another family Christmas tradition you can start is to pick out a Christmas story to read or Christmas movie to watch. Watch the movie or read the story on Christmas Eve before bed time with your family.

Decorate Stockings
Each year you can buy dollar stockings for everyone in the family and start a tradition of decorating them. After decorating them, your kids will see them as a fun art project instead of just a toy holder.

You may already have a few Christmas traditions of your own, but these are a few ideas for some others you can add into your holiday. If you don't have any family traditions yet, it is never too late to start. You do not need to start a bunch of traditions at once. Try adding one or two new traditions in every year to keep the idea new and exciting. Christmas traditions are an amazing way to top off the perfect Christmas holiday.

What are your favorite Christmas traditions?
