Frugal Living: Life Hacks for Every Day Items

Many people do not know many of the items they uses everyday can be used in multiple ways. Some other these hidden tricks can save you time and money, which is important when raising a large family. Here are some of my favorite life hacks for every day items.

Lip Balm
  • Next time you cut yourself while shaving, rub a little lip balm on the nick to stop the bleeding.
  • If you have a zipper that is difficult to slide, smear lip balm along the zipper's teeth to make it zip smoothly.
  • Screws and nails will go into wood easier if first coated in lip balm.
Cheerios
  • You can relieve the itch of poison ivy, chicken pox, sunburn, or poison oak by blending two cups of Cheerios into a very fine powder. Pour the Cheerio powder into a warm bath and soak for about 30 minutes to relieve the itch.
  • By pouring a cup of Cheerios into a blender and making a fine powder, you can eliminate chapped hands. After you have put the Cheerios into the blender, place the powder into a big bowl, rub your hands in the powder for a few minutes, and then rinse them with cold cater. Dry your hands well and apply lotion to lock in the moisture.
Alka-Seltzer
  • To have a sparkling, clean toilet, place two Alka-Seltzer tabs into the toilet. Let the tabs soak for 20 minutes and clean with a brush for a beautiful toilet.
  • Place two Alka-Seltzer tabs into a glass of water and apply to the skin with a cotton ball to relieve insect bites.
Fabric Softener Sheets
  • Since fabric softener sheets are made to prevent static cling, if you wipe your television screen with a fabric softener sheet, it will prevent dust from collecting on it.
  • Cleaning shower doors with a used fabric softener sheet will eliminate soap scum.
  • Eliminate the stink out of a trash can by placing a fabric softener sheet in the bottom of the trash can.
Baking Soda
  • Baking soda can help your septic tank by maintaining its proper pH and alkalinity. To achieve this, just pour 1 cup of baking soda down a toilet once a week. This will help keep odors controlled also.
  • To eliminate odors from carpet, sprinkle baking soda across the carpet, and after 15 minutes vacuum up the baking soda.
  • Apply baking soda to the armpits to substitute as a deodorant.
Chalk
  • To keep ants out of your home, draw a line of chalk around all of the possible entrances for the ants to enter your home. Ants will not cross over chalk lines. This will also work with slugs.Salt works great for killing ants, too.
  • Rub chalk on the tip of a screw driver to keep it from slipping.
  • Chalk absorbs moisture. By placing chalk inside of tool boxes it can keep your tools from rusting.
Cool Whip
  • Use a tablespoon of Cool Whip to wipe on your shoes to shine them.
  • Clean your plants' leaves by wiping each leaf with Cool Whip.
  • Remove make up with a hand full of Cool Whip. Rinse the face well after applying the Cool Whip.
  • Substitute shaving cream with Cool Whip.
Gatorade
  • Because Gatorade contains citric acid, it makes it perfect to clean toilets. Pour two cups into the toilet and let it sit for about an hour. Then, clean the toilet with a brush and flush for a clean toilet.
  • Gatorade can help ease morning sickness because it regulates the body's electrochemical balance.
